This is an animation i made of James Joyce’s bust in Stephens Green, Dublin. Its pretty much the same version i uploaded to youtube last year, just with some rotoscoping and editing done to the colours and lighting to give more of a dusk/night feel too it

The audio is a recording from 1929 of James Joyce reading the Anna Livia Plurabelle section of Finnegans Wake. It’s a chattering dialogue between two washer women who as night falls become a tree and a stone. (pages 213-216, or the last few pages of part 1)

this is my first threadless submission anyway so im not going to be too shocked if it doesnt get that far, supposedly you have to be on threadless 24/7 to be in with a chance of getting a high score, and even then its the threadless people who have the last saw in what is printed.

I figured they would sound pretty neat together so i took the audio from the left SRB intertank and panned it to the left audio channel and panned the right SRB to the right channel and this is what it sounds like: (sounds best with headphones on!)

As somebody on youtube mentioned, they sound like “robotic space whales calling out to each other”, which is a fairly accurate description of what it sounds like!

I think John Cage would have liked it

I found this recording of Bushwacker on a “Guitarist” magazine CD i bought a long long long time ago that Eric Used to write for, i was fairly sure i threw it out along with all the other guitar magazines i got rid of a few years ago but luckily enough this one slipped by me.

its such an excellent version of bushwacker too.

I was pretty shocked to find out only a few weeks ago that Eric had passed away, back in 2005… and that he was Irish… and a such brilliant guitarist…
all i really knew about him was that he used to always have some good songs tabbed out in the “guitarist” and “guitarist techniques” magazines now and again… im certain i learned the finger picking for Nick Drake’s “Things Behind the Sun” from one of Eric’s columns…

and anyway we didnt have youtube back in 2003 or 2004 or whenever it was i bought those magazines so it wasnt as easy to just do a search for some ones music as it is these days.

Shame he had to leave so soon anyway. There is a good radio documentary on RTE that is narrated by his brother, just some interesting things about Eric’s life and how they grew up together (with a bit of background music by Eric). He actually gives a fairly positive account of the last few months of Eric’s life, check it out for yourself, you’ll know what i mean:

Update For Terence McKenna (18/04/2011):  Too many updates to mentions!
